Let the Brawl Begin

NOTE: This is a personal-invite only event, only those that I personally invite can come.  Sorry for those others, I didn't realize that other people I don't know hang around here.

Alright, time to give some more details, and one of them is this year's theme!  I'm sure this video will make it quite apparent.

Yup, it's Super Smash Bros Brawl this year, and we're gonna have ourselves a tournament!  There are many reasons I chose the theme.  First, almost everyone who comes enjoys this game, some very good at is as well.  Second, is that we haven't done it before, and I like to use different themes than before.  And the third, and most telling reason, is someone who might be coming this year.

I'm sure those of you that were there remember Mike, the brawler who we fought about a year ago over wi-fi, and crushed all of us.  Well, this year, he's hopefully gonna finally show, and he's ready to face all of us once more.  I, for one, am REALLY excited about this.

This year, we're gonna start the tournament in the earlier stages of the event, so that everyone can participate.  The rules are as I believe they always should be: Final Destination, 2-5 stock (not sure yet), no items.  Now, it may actually take place at Colosseum, the similar stage with the pillars at the side, with music I have yet to decide.  We'll see, but that's how it's going to roll.  So I would advise practicing every now and then (I certainly hope to be), and get ready, because it's going to be the best fight yet!

Storytime!

Hey guys, my next post will probably be coming up soon, but first, I want to post a small part of a story not done by me.  This was done by a friend of mine named Michaela, who I think is just as good, probably better writer than me.  She's been working on this story recently, and I thought it was worth sharing to you guys, partially because she's antisocial and has next to no friends, so no one besides me has really seen this.  I think it deserves attention, so here you go.  If you guys like it, make sure to comment to her about it at the Summer party, as she will be there, and she deserves to get praised for her work.

Winding Trail
Michaela Verburg
Chapter One

The steady beat of horse’s hooves as they walked along the stone-lined trail nearly put me to sleep in the saddle.
“You still awake Commander,” one of my troops joked as they jerked me out of the sense of peacefulness the trail gave to me.
“Amber,” I called over my shoulder to her, “You try doing this job if you think this is so funny.”
“No thanks,” she replied back as moved her blonde bangs out of her face.
I shook my head. These troops were the best out there, considering that we were always on call for one thing or another. Though when you are out on the road for three months straight, nailing pirates and raiders, it was hard to stay awake in the saddle.
“Tristina,” Amber called again after a couple hours, “Can we stop here for the night?”
“Set up camp,” I yelled to everyone else as I heard lingering snickers from earlier.
I shook my head as I tried to keep from laughing. They were my family. Whether they knew it or not I had no clue, but I wasn’t going to start placing bets on them.
As the troops set up camp, I dismounted my mare, Sunburst, and walked a little bit into the woods until I came to a small, gurgling stream. Twilight began to settle in as I sat there thinking.
I thought about my past. My mother who was killed as a sacrifice, and my little sister who disappeared from Elaine’s house one night while I was gone on the road, shorty after I had joined the army. Now here I was five years later, in command of a unit that was considered the best in every way, yet was named the Gray Wolves, which was a constant reminder about the blood wolves. With these people behind me I’ve had many adventures across the kingdom.
There was still a secret that was only between Lord Briar and I that my troops probably never will know.
As the last rays of the sun touched my light brown hair, the snap of a branch made me jump to my feet and look around. Another branch snapped and then another, until I saw the dark outline of a wolf in the growing twilight. Seeing one wasn’t a new occurrence to me, in fact I saw one where ever I went after I did a mission for Lord Briar.
I was a little scared because to keep seeing one was considered to be the blackest of luck. That wolf could easily be a Blood Wolf that is looking for payback for something. Those wolves could shape shift into a human and you would never know the difference. Normally you were supposed to visit one of their many cathedrals to show respect, so that they wouldn’t kill you and drink your blood. I didn't have the time to go to one, so I hoped it wasn't after me.
Unconsciously, I touched the carved wolf at the base of my neck, the one a friend had given me about a year ago, before he disappeared.
“Commander,” Amber called as she walked towards me.
I looked around and noticed that the wolf had disappeared as quietly as he had appeared.
“I’m alright,” I said as I walk towards her.
“Jacen and Court are arguing over something stupid again.”
“I’m coming,” I groaned. They did that every place we went. I was just hoping it wasn’t going to end like that one time when we were in Cuttlervile that turned into a mess. Jacen and Court had been arguing about what Lord Glasson should do about the pirates when the people of the town joined in and it became a brawl in the town square. It took everyone in my unit to stop it. In the end, nearly everyone had nasty bruises and some people had broken bones to show for the whole thing. I’ll admit that there were a few dented heads as well.
When I got back to the camp, I saw Jacen and Court brawling in the dirt while everyone else was cheering them on.
As quietly as I possibly could, I walked right up to the both of them and banged their heads together, before they even had time to notice that I was there.
“Now are you going to cut this out?” I asked as I stared at the two of them as they lay in the dirt.
“I’m good,” Court grumbled as she tried to stand up with little success.
        “Jace!”
“I’ve had enough,” he mumbled as he gazed up at the starry sky.
“Good, I don’t want to deal with this again this week.”
“Yes commander,” Both of the chorused wearily.
I rolled my eyes as I walked to my tent. Once I was out of everyone’s sight I smirked because I didn’t believe them for even a minute.
As I laid in my bedroll that night, I heard the howls of a pack of wolves that seemed to completely surround the camp. As I listened shivers rolled down my spine, but I refused to even think about what those wolves could mean.
When the first rays of dawn finally appeared the next morning, my unit and I were all ready on the road. As we rode towards the east we watched the sunrise with its hues of pink and gold that reflected off the clouds. A few of my people were still asleep in the saddle when the sunrise was over. That was normal, considering we were always up at least two hours before dawn every day and didn’t go to sleep till late at night.
When the light was beginning to fade from the sky, the stone walls of Terin began to loom in front of us. Nearly everyone gave a soft sigh of relief. It was good to be home.
Chapter 2
The sights and sounds of the city greeted us like old friends. It had taken us two weeks to get here from Monroe, a town near the Azure Sea. The cobble stone streets of the capital hadn’t changed nor had the whitewashed buildings. What was weird was the people that walked the streets were grim faced and scared. As far as I knew there were no direct threats against the kingdom, besides if there were we would out there dealing with it. Those under my command were worried as well because no one could figure out what was going on.
When we reached a guard station, I dismounted Sunburst and walked up to the nearest guard, hopefully they would have the answer to this mess.
“Excuse me, we just got back to the city and noticed the chaos. I was wondering if you knew what’s going on,” I asked one of the guards.
“It’s none of your business Miss,” the guard snapped.
“It is our business Idiot, since we guard this kingdom,” Amber shouted at him
Just as the guard lunged for her, his companion stopped him.
“They are the Gray Wolves,” the other guard said as he inclined his head to the insignia of a grey wolf on my shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” the original guard apologized. “It’s the Blood Wolves that have everyone so grim.”
        “What is going on?”
“The sacrifices are going to be in a few weeks,” He said as he gave me a weird look.
Drat, I so lost track of time. “It slipped our minds, I admitted.
“I would have done the same, if I was in the same place.”
I nodded to the guard and then my unit and I walked deeper into the city. The cathedral loomed over the streets that were filled with throngs of people that were racing towards it. Almost everyone in the city, except for the soldiers and the royal courts who were exempt, was worried about the sacrifice, but this year the chaos it caused was far worse than normal. In the streets people were pushing and shoving each other out of the way, so that they could try to save their own lives by begging for mercy at the cathedral gates.
Amber shook her head sadly, “Why are they acting like this? The sacrifice happens once a year, what makes this year so different?”
“I don’t know,” I whispered as my unit mumbled among themselves.
At fountain square we all went our separate ways. The break we all thought we were going to get didn’t look like it was going to happen, at least not with all the chaos in the streets. I knew we all need some R&R for at least a couple weeks, but it normally never happens because something like the situation Terin was in now always came up and no one else wanted to deal with it, so we got stuck dealing with it.
I kept riding until I reached a house that was surrounded by all sorts of flowers. There were roses and lilies all around the whitewashed walls of the medium sized house. A blond haired women with streaks of silver in her hair was bent over a rose bush with a knife in her hand.
“Good evening Miss Evans,” I said as I dismounted sunburst.
She looked up slowly with confusion in her eyes until they settled on the insignia on my shoulder.
“So you’re finally back Miss Airon, huh,” She said with a grin as took in the weary look in my sapphire blues eyes, my tangled brown hair, and the stains on shirt and breeches.
“Yes, indeed. It’s been a long three months, especially how everything has changed around here with all the chaos that’s going on.” I said as I led my mare into the stables behind the house.
Miss Evans followed me, nodding her head slowly as she did so.  “Everyone is up in arms this time around because the Blood Wolves have called for more to be killed.”
“And why would that be,” I asked as I took of Sunburst’s tack and began to brush her down.
“They say that we have not been listening to them and that if they don’t get what they wanted they will kill everyone in retaliation.”
“Oh that’s just great. So now let me guess the court is meeting to decide what to do about this, and we are going to be the messengers of their decision.”
        “They aren’t meeting.”
I stopped brushing my mare and tuned to stare at Miss Evans. “Please tell me that what you just said isn’t true.”
“I’m sorry, but it is. The Wolves are saying that they have people in the royal court that will tell them if the court meets about that.”
“And if they do meet then everyone will die,” I said finishing the threat.
She nodded and I went back to brushing.
“Lord Briar refuses to name a new heir,” She said trying to change the subject.
“He hasn’t,” said with surprise. I figured he would want to not be connected to his adopted son after what he ended up being.
“He says that Felon shall remain the heir no matter what anyone says.”
I put Sunburst away as I thought. The rumors about Felon being a Blood Wolf puts Lord Briar at risk when it comes to the peoples view.
“Don’t worry,” Miss Evans said as she placed a hand on her shoulder, “Lord Briar isn’t stupid. He knows what he is doing.”
        “I know.”
“Here,” she said as she placed the keys to the rooms I rented from her in my hand, “You need to rest Coronal Airon, Leader of the Gray Wolves.”
I walked out of the stables and up the stairs inside of the house till I came to an oak door with the number seven burned into it. The door unlocked easily, even though it hadn’t opened been opened in a while, and I stepped inside.
The bed was made with clean, white linens and my books were still in their place on desk were I had left them three months prior. Everything was clean and dust free, something that I needed to thank Miss Evans for.
I placed my bags and sword in a corner of the room before I laid on my bed and fell asleep.

The Event

Alright, a couple days ago, I did an anonymous post announcing something coming sometime this June, without any specific details but this drawing.

This was obviously because I'm a jerk, and I LOVE leaving cliffhangers (evident in both my stories and my posts).  I'm sure some of you got this right away, but others probably didn't.  For those of you that didn't, allow me to explain it for you.

Last summer, something interesting happened.   I can't remember what month it was, but I remember that I had almost absolutely nowhere to go.  No game nights were near, no hangouts, nothing.  So, completely out of the random, I decided "hey, why don't I have a huge party"?  And so I did.  We had a huge party, just like my birthday parties, only this time, for absolutely no reason other than to have one.

Well, this year, I've decided to do it again.  I admit, it may seem a little early to be mentioning it, but you have to remember, I generally start planning these things about 3 months ahead of time.  It's almost April, and these next couple months are going to pass by FAST.  So it would be best if we started planning things now.

The main change for this event than usual is the date setup.  Unlike before where I had a specific day to do it on, this time, I have no specific date planned yet.  My goal is to do it at a time where the most people can show up.  Granted, most of my friends are almost never busy in the summer, but I know a couple of them have complex schedules.  I will speak with those specific people, and get a specific date eventually.

Other than that, this is no different from my Birthday parties, besides not involving my birthday.  There will be lots of pizza, lots of soda, and lots of video games and fun.  There will be a couple planned events as usual, and since it will be summer, I plan on some different activities (one specific different one at least).  I don't know the theme yet, but it will be coming, I'm sure.

One of my greatest hopes is to finally record some of the stuff we do.  Every party so far, I've said I've wanted to do that, and well, my desire to do so is still burning.  Especially after Aaron's...contribution to the last one, there are some things that happen here that DESERVE to be forever burned into other's minds.   I have no idea how we would possibly do that, but who knows, maybe we'll come up with something.

So start working on your Pokemon teams, get some Super Smash Bros training in, and get ready for the next big explosion at the Malley house!  Here's to hoping it's the best one yet!

Ace Attorney: Brennan Malley : The Next Case

Chapter 2 Part 2

We started off by going to a nearby joint and having lunch together.  While we did have a case to investigate, I hadn't talked with Aaron for quite a while, and wanted to catch up.  As I had suspected, he was having just as much trouble keeping his job as I was.  It was nice, to finally have another person who understood our pain.  After a long and surprising cheery talk, we set off to prepare for the case.
As we began to approach the crime scene, we heard screaming coming from somewhere nearby.  Lots of screaming.  Not the "AHH!!!! SOMEONE'S GONNA KILL ME!!!!" kind, but the "OH MY GOSH, IT'S HIM!!!" kind.  I could tell because, well, when you hear about thirty teenage females scream at the same time, you can easily guess it has something to do with some new hot guy.  I had no interest whatsoever in who was there, but of course, Aaron's curiosity quickly got the best of him.  I mean, it's not like he put any effort against that curiosity.
"Hey Brennan, let's go see what all the cheering is about!"
I sighed.  Like we needed one more distraction right now.  We'd already gotten off track about five times since we'd left.  I had no idea there were so many doughnut shops on this rout.
"Aaron, it's just a new popular boy band or something.  First off, it probably has nothing to do with what we are trying to do currently, and two, it's going to make us look even more pathetic than we already are."
"But what if they play good music?"
"Then that, my friend, would be a miracle."
We both laughed, and I started to continue on...until I realized that Aaron still wanted to check it out.
"Heh, there's no arguing with you is there, Aaron?  All right, we'll see who it is.  Maybe we'll get lucky, and a couple of females will have interest in us."
Aaron looked at me a little surprised.
"I had no idea you were interested in women."
"Aaron, I'm a jobless deadbeat with depression issues and next to no friends.  Of course I'm interested in women.  Don't tell me the thought of women didn't have anything to do with your decision to see this band."
   Aaron actually blushed.
   "Well, you got me there."
We walked over and joined the assembling crowd, but were a little surprised at what we saw.  This was certainly no band; it was only one very-well dressed man.  He had all the qualities of a pop star: the combed down hair, the blue eyes, the calm, apparently attractive smile.  The only odd thing was the suit.  He wore a grey suit with a red tie, like some sort of businessman.  My curiosity piqued, I dug further into the crowd, trying to figure out just who the heck this was.  I could tell he noticed me pushing through the crowd, which really wasn't surprising, as the rest of the crowd was completely women.  What did surprise me is what happened next.
"Hey, mademoiselles, can we please make way for the odd gentlemen in the front?"
Like a bunch of mindless slaves they all scattered, and in the course of three seconds there was not a soul as close as two yards from us.   I took a few steps closer, hoping I was doing what he wanted and not making a complete fool of myself.  To my further surprise, he offered me his hand.
"Hello, good sir, it is excellent to finally meet you in person!"
I shook his hand, not attempting to withhold my confused expression.   He looked at me with what I would probably call his "signature" grin (with all the ladies swooning of course).
"Aren't you the commoner known as Brennan Malley?"
  "Yes, I am, but how..."
"But of course!  It is a pleasure to finally meet you, although you look a little less noble than I had hoped."
If I wasn't confused before, I certainly was now.
"Excuse me, but who the heck are you?"
His face instantly took on the look of surprise, which really didn't help my confused situation at all.
"Certainly you must know of the wonderful lad you are speaking to?"
"No, I really don't.  I have never seen you before in my life."
  He looked shocked, almost appalled.
"This is outrageous!  Unheard of, impossible!  There is not a babe in this city that has not heard of m-"
"Look, just tell me who the heck you are, so I can get back to my work.  I have more important things to do than listen to the whining of some pretty boy."
I was a little more than annoyed by this point.  There are few things I hate as much as some upstart thinking that he's the coolest thing since iced mocha; and this guy was obviously obsessed with himself.  Heck, he couldn't spend five seconds without pulling out his little mirror and checking somewhere on his face!   He noticed my annoyance, and decided it would be best to introduce himself.  Of course, he decided to do so by checking his face once again, and then trying to look as gentlemanly as possible.
"I am Sir Duke III, famous nobleman, wonderful gift from the gods, child of goddesses, and, most important to you, the perfect prosecutor.  I am your opponent in this battle of wits, which can only end in my victory, as I am absolutely perfect!"
I couldn't hide a look of disgust.  This was my opponent!?  This was the man prosecuting my friend!?  True, I no longer knew any prosecutors, but I had at least hoped for something better than this.  I was going to spend hours defending my client against a man who I swore had pink glitter in his hair.  I should have known my luck came with a price.
  "It's a...pleasure to meet you."
  Duke frowned.
"You don't exactly look so pleased, as one meeting me for the first time should."
"I'm honestly quite frustrated.  I had hoped for someone with less of a swelled head, and a little more common sense."
I admit, this was a little over the top for me, but remember, I was just about jobless, had just about no money and no friends,  and had recently found out that one of the few friends I did have was not only in bad emotional shape, but was being tried for murder.  For once, I had a reason to be pissed.  He was, of course, quite offended.
"And I had hoped you were cut from a finer cloth, but it seems you are just as much of a peasant as the rest!  Fine then, I will see you tomorrow, and will teach you how to properly battle in court!"
He then turned, and walked away.  He gave a single wave of his hand, and all the women who had been watching came chasing after him.  I sat down, quite upset at the whole thing.  After a few minutes of pondering, I noticed Aaron looked quite down.  It occurred to me that the whole experience had probably made him feel a little down too.  Someone who can control women like game pieces on a chess board can bring a guy down pretty easily.  I sat down next to him, putting my arm on his shoulder.   Now was not the time to be the depressed one, there were others in worse positions.
"Don't worry man, I'm sure you'll get yourself a very pretty lady someday.  Now let's get back on track, and get some evidence that we can shove right in that smug jerk's face."
  Aaron perked up right away.
"Yeah!  We'll show him!  I'll bet we'll find enough evidence to end the case in five minutes!  No, two!  C'mon, let's get going!"
He ran off towards the site, charge with energy, as I walked slowly towards the site, wishing I was fighting Brea instead of this stupid jerk.

Brennan Malley: The Next Case

Chapter 2 Part 1

When I got back to Michaela to tell her the news, I heard just about exactly what I thought I'd hear.
     "You must be insane!"
"There's no way you can win that case!"
"Do you realize how much of hole you've already dug yourself in?"
I honestly didn't expect her to take it very well.  Indeed, she never did with most of the cases I took.  I admit, some of them were pretty stupid moves, and while I eventually did end up winning, it occasionally was pretty close.  I did wish she would trust my skills a little bit more though...you know, despite me having lost my job.
"Look, I don't need more reminders of how stupid I am.  I've hit my head on the wall enough times today.  I came to you because I thought you might be able to help me.  I know absolutely nothing about this case, and I don't want to run straight into trial in a case that seems hopeless enough as it is."
She sat there for a couple minutes, whispering more negative comments about the case to herself.  Once again, I wasn't really surprised, although I wish she could've just said them in her mind.  I could still hear her. After a few more minutes, she sighed, and looked at me.
"Brennan...I wish I could help you.  I really do.  But right now, I myself have a lot on my plate.  My investigation yesterday brought up a lot that the ordinary police missed.  This criminal is a professional, I am almost impressed.   Further investigation is needed, and I mean a lot of it.  I am sorry Brennan, but right now I really can't help you."
That was pretty unfortunate.  I couldn't do this case without evidence, there'd be no way.  I need someone to help me get more details, an official who has the right to do so.
She could tell I was a little depressed.  She sighed for a minute, and then looked up again.
"Look...maybe I can help you.  Maybe I can find some spare time in which..."
"No Michaela, I can't burden you further with my lack of capability.  You've already done too much for me as it is.  I'll find a way somehow."
"Well, can you think of anyone else you know that could help?  Maybe not a detective, but don't you know anyone who is good at observing details?"
     "Possibly, but I'm not-"
I stopped in the middle of my sentence out of sudden realization.  It might be a little difficult, and I may have to pull a few strings, but...
"Brennan, you have that look on your face again.  The one when you have an idea, crazy or otherwise.  Oddly enough, I missed that grin."
"Enough about my face, Michaela, I need to borrow your phone for a second.  I have to make a call, and I don't have one of my own..."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I can't believe it!  For the first time in years, you and I together on a case!  Finally, together again on a grand adventure!  We could get our reputations back!  We could get our salaries back!   YEAH!  We can do this!  The defense lawyer and his trusty detective, off on a dangerous-"
"First off, Aaron, it's only been a year since we've seen each other.   Second, we're not an official team.  I'm somewhat of a freelance attorney, the government doesn't exactly have the highest opinion of me anymore.  You're more here as my tour guide, able to examine the scene due to the fact that we're close friends.  I'm sorry, but this investigation won't be going on your record."
    "Aww..."
"Heh, don't worry old friend, I'll make sure to treat you to a restaurant or something afterwords in payment."
    "Hey, thanks!"
It was the next day, and after making a few calls, and a little bit of pleading to the police department, I managed to get my old friend, Detective Aaron, to help me out with the investigation.
Aaron has a personality quite similar to mine, only a little more extreme in some areas, and a little duller than others.  Lots of determination, lots of ego, decent intelligence, but is quite clumsy, has the hardest time noticing small details, and doesn't have the greatest of hearing...while this is okay at best for a lawyer to have, it's terrible for a detective to have...which unfortunately is exactly what Aaron is.  He had more of an interest in the police side of things, and didn't really feel like going to a whole ton of law school, so he became a detective.  Of course, lacking some important talents that a detective should have, Aaron hasn't had the greatest of records.
However, that doesn't mean he's a complete failure.  He isn't the stupidest man out there, and he has a good sense of what is right and what is wrong, and does have a heart, something every man should have.  His determination gets him into lots of trouble, but occasionally he's reckless at the right time, and there were a few cases that couldn't have resolved as they did without him.  Now he wasn't ever my detective; he was actually Brandon's, being his brother.  However, as some might put it, "there may be blood between them, but they're not brothers".   They may work together, but Aaron and I hang out more, and he does help me occasionally.  Now, for example.
"Now Aaron, how much do you know about the case so far?"
"About as much as you do.  Something happened at a bar, and now our friend Brea is in big trouble."
"Do you believe she did it?  You know...actually murdered the guy?"
Of course, Aaron didn't seem to have any belief in that possibility whatsoever.  Gotta hand it to him, he's got determination up both sleeves.
"Heh, no way!  She may be a little off right now, but she's as harmless as a kitten!"
"I wouldn't exactly say that...she's thrown quite a few weapons at you."
"That's true...but there's still no way she could've done it!"
I tapped the small button on my hat with one finger.  A habit I've developed recently to show that I'm thinking.
"Of course not.  She's way too weak and emotionally spent to kill anyone at all.  I'm honestly surprised anyone chose to blame her.  Speaking of which...who am I against?"
   Aaron shrugged.
   "I don't know much...although I hear he's incredibly flamboyant."
   I couldn't help but sigh.
"Great...just what I needed, an annoying opponent."
"Yeah, apparently he's so confident in his capabilities, he's not even investigating the crime!"
   I spun around, very surprised.
   "Really?  None at all?"
"Nope, apparently the case is already solved in his mind.  He doesn't believe he can possibly lose."
I gave a smile of confidence.  Finally, a stroke of luck!  Had it been a controlled, intellectual person like Brandon, I might have been worried.  But this isn't someone who actually knows what he's doing, this is someone who thinks he's the greatest there is, and has no doubt in that belief whatsoever.  This case would still be difficult to pull of, but this certainly helps.  Aaron looked delighted.
"I'm glad to see that confident smile on your face again, partner!  Haven't seen it in years!"
I held back correcting him.  Sometimes, you've just got to let it go.
"Yes, my friend.  As strange as this may sound, I missed yours too.  Now, shall we begin investigating?"
Aaron saluted the only way Aaron salutes...in a pose.
   "Yeah, let's do this!"
I couldn't help but laugh.  Man...it's been a long time since I've done that.
